Hail Merry Macaroons
A few weeks ago, I wrote a review of the delicious Hail Merry Chocolate Miracle Tart. This treat had been an impulse buy, but involved an extraordinarily difficult decision. You see, next to the tart were equally tempting packages of Hail Merry Macaroons. That evening, the tart won out, but I knew I’d be back to try the macaroons. And indeed, I was.
Hail Merry Macaroons come in a variety of flavors including chocolate, blonde, caramel sea salt, and strawberry almond. I’m happy to note that none of these flavors are made using agave syrup, which is surrounded by some controversy due to its high fructose content. Instead, the macaroons are sweetened with maple syrup and some additional palm sugar in the caramel sea salt flavor. Hail Merry’s blog actually does a nice job of honestly comparing sweeteners.
I chose a bag each of chocolate and blonde macaroons. They were both on sale for $2.99 at my local Whole Foods. The packaging indicated that they are gluten-free, vegan, made with raw oils, no refined sugar and are low temperature dehydrated rather than baked. This last bit is good news. High heat can destroy some of the health benefits of almond flour, a key ingredient in the blonde flavor. I would also like to note that these qualify as paleo treats too! Additionally, the packages bore the Certified Vegan, Certified Gluten-Free and Kosher seals. The images on Hail Merry’s website also show that these products are Non GMO Project Verified. However, this seal was not shown on the particular packages I purchased.
According to the Hail Merry website, the blonde macaroons are made with the following ingredients: organic shredded coconut, organic maple syrup, natural raw almond flour, organic extra virgin coconut oil, organic Madagascar bourbon vanilla, and sea salt. The chocolate is made without almond flour and contains organic maple syrup, organic shredded coconut, Fair Trade dark cocoa, organic extra virgin coconut oil, organic Madagascar bourbon vanilla, and sea salt. I will note that there are a few differences between the website and the packages I purchased. Both flavors I bought have “pure” Madagascar bourbon vanilla rather than “organic” and the package of chocolate macaroons simply mentions “dark cocoa” rather than “Fair Trade” dark cocoa. So presumably, Hail Merry has subsequently improved the sourcing of ingredients for these products.
The blonde macaroons are 140 calories per two-macaroon serving and the chocolate macaroons are 130. Each serving has 90 calories of fat, mostly from the incredibly healthy extra virgin coconut oil. Hail Merry suggests that you store these in the fridge, but eat them at room temperature. Coconut oil becomes liquid at 76°F so the macaroons will “melt in your mouth” if brought to room temperature.
Now for the taste. The flavors were distinctively different, but equally delicious so picking a favorite isn’t really fair. The floral coconut flavor of the blonde macaroons is complemented beautifully by the rich bourbon vanilla. The vanilla flavor is strong–which I like. This is not some fake or anemic tasting vanilla either. This is the real deal. The assertive flavor of the cocoa in the chocolate macaroons softens the coconut taste. But the coconut is still detectable. The vanilla is also more subtle in this flavor. I like the cocoa in this recipe–it has that deep smoky bitterness that you’d expect of good quality chocolate, never cloyingly sweet.
In terms of texture, Hail Merry is right. These do become melty and wonderful when brought to room temperature. But I couldn’t help myself and also ate a few straight from the fridge. Sure, they were a bit harder, but still completely delicious. I also like the density of these macaroons. Some coconut macaroons are more coarsely textured and lower density, so I enjoyed this more refined, denser consistency for a change.
Overall, I am once again impressed. Another treat made with quality ingredients used thoughtfully. The delicious results satisfy the requirements of a number of different dietary approaches.
